Recommendations for testing |
|
I've a question that has nothing to do with the script, but I would welcome suggestions. (Admin - feel free to delete this if you don't want an off topic question here)
I don't have a webhost, but looking at the script and the comments on the forum, I would like to start making a site and using CuteNews.
I would like to be able to test the pages on my desktop rather than uploading to a host. I've heard that this is possible. Can anyone give me recommendations for software (the easier to install, the better!).
I use Windows XP and mainly Firefox. I would plan to have a Unix host. Ideally I would like the software to be usable from a Flash Drive, i.e. I could use it on another PC/laptop without having to reinstall the testbed software.
Thanks.

Not sure about running a web server of a Flash Drive, though it is possible. But to save you headaches, why not install centOS Linux 4.2 (http://www.centos.org/), it is a complete Red Hat Enterprise 4 but free . Installing Apache, mySQL, PHP4 amd Perl 5 is easy as it comes with it all already but you need to install it- can done during installation or added after. You just need to configure it to work the way you want it. Once it is set up, open port 80 to the public and you can access your pages on the internet just like a live host. If you want a free domain name to use, try (http://www.dyndns.com) to obtain a free domain name and point it to your public IP.
If you want to edit your files remotely, set up vsftpd (FTP server) or use SSH Access (make sure port 22 is open). You can SSH access remotely to your Linux box with Putty for Windows (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/). On a local network, you can network your windows and Linux box to share or edit files from both machines (provided that you have set the permissions to do so) using Samba.
One last thing, there'll be a lot of reading up to do
Hope that helps,

Thanks for all your replies.
Once I knew what I was looking for, based on all your comments, I found Xampp http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
I went for the "lite" version and it runs easily from the usb flash purely by unzipping it, rather than doing a full install.
