 Power of Sorting by Least Viewed |

I was thinking about how powerful sorting by least viewed could be.. I always overlook it. I've been giving it way less credit than it deserves. For example.. say your site is driven by the idea that people need and will be clicking around.. which duh every site wants that.. Well, if you display like 10 least viewed items somewhere or even on your main page.. this would be telling your site that basically you want all your content to get equal treatment. Don't move those popular items into focus until the rest of these items get recognition first.. and when they get recognition, move them out of the way for more items until they catch up.
Obviously new items will show up first.. then when they get too popular they'll move away and give something else a chance to move up.. whereas most popular continually shows and gives all the clicks to.. the most popular.. boring!
A good benefit would be that now the stress is no longer on always providing new content on your site all the time.. just watching how people surf through all your content while you occasionally add more into the cycle whenever you feel like it.
A few problems would be that you either need to be able to create a universal $template for all these items.. or they will all need to match the same $template from the get-go. All content quality needs to either be of equal value.. or at least worthwhile enough that people are going to want to even click it in the first place.. Otherwise it'll sit on your main page forever. So, I guess that makes the challenge to only add good or interesting content.. but then you can't devour content like Google who just takes every link possible because it will all sooner or later get clicked and keep them on their site.
I'm going to do a few things using it like that and seeing if it works out like I predict.
