Hey Ned Flanders! Glad to see you making some progress into the world of CNR. Hope you are delightfully surprised. The journey isn't always easy into CNR, but it's always worthwhile. We're a pretty unique group of smart people here.

Sorry you had trouble with the Clear Cache mystery Razz odd, yes.. big deal? no.. where do you suggest we mention this fact for other new users?

Hi Scott,
So you're basically saying I'm part of a unique group of smart people... Smile
I'd type it down in either some new topic called "new features" and/or "CU setting changes not taking effect" and as prevention add it in the existing topics "CuteNews.RU 2.5.4 (English)" (list it below "some of the changes" there) and/or "cutenews.ru vs cutenews"...but that's just my humble opinion....however, I'm part of a unique group of smart people Wink

I agree with having the clear cache issue typed in a specific place - it's a really small issue that's easily fixed, but it's a real stinker when you don't know what's wrong. Might I suggest a sticky topic of "common problems and their solutions" or something similar? I imagine you guys get a lot of people with the same problems or questions that have been answered countless times before, that have not necessarily been added to the FAQ or readme file. Things like how to paginate articles to split them into seperate sections, how to link to the comments/full-story - it might sound a bit silly to an experienced user, but I'm sure many of you remember your first time using cuteRU when you couldn't get a link to full-story working and thinking "WHAAAAA??" It would save a bit of time for newbies who just want an answer - save 'em searching the forum or posting a new topic when they don't realise the answer's been posted like a gazillion times.

just a thought ;D

lol yes we're all unique and smart. it's the broadest forum i visit lol, all kinda countries here. but no real time wasters, except maybe me i dont know i think i type too much sometimes lol i have to keep remembering that rule that sometimes it's what you didn't say..

anyway, i think the easiest solution to for now is to add something during the installation process that prepares you for the simple steps of creating your website with cnr. maybe a checkbox to skip if you're experienced. what you think? some things to take out the mysteries, or even maybe just disable the clear cache thing all together... i can't remember why it's necessary anyway.

I don't think you type too much. From what I've seen you're one of the nicest and most helpful members here c:

And I think that's a pretty damn good idea, too - even if the information is on the forum as proposed, there's no guarantee people will actually READ it. At least if it's there in front of their face they've got no real excuse! Razz Perhaps the first screen for the mini-tutorial thing should be a really brief introduction, with a small list of bullet points or something showing what the tutorial's going to cover. I know a lot of users can be really impatient and they're more likely to skip a gigantic wall of text before they even know what it's for.

As for the cache, I'm not entirely sure myself, but I'd imagine by storing certain files locally in the website's directory, the script loads and runs a bit faster. Much like the cache on your web browser, for instance - which explains why changes don't take place until you clear it.

Makes perfect sense.. I'd do it if I had more time. A lot of what you say is I think why CNr isn't bigger. People pick wordpress cause it's the most idiot proof. It seems any baboon can stumble into a profitable website and news like that would travel quick.

What about turning off cache by default? Right now, it's enabled when you download the script.

Not a bad idea to save some people confusion, though then you'd have to make it clear that it needs to be turned back ON if wanting to use it Smile .

The other side of the argument is, if you have to turn cache off in the first place then the system is broken.

Cache requires a degree of self management that seems to be lacking in CNRU, it's something I keep coming accross. If I don't clear the cache each morning on a big site then the dir fills up - sometimes to a file security limit that exists to prevent floods, new comments all get numbered 1 (with correspondingly incorrect links), styles don't dynamically update correctly when new content is added by users and so forth.

Ideally cache should only remain static until the data is physically changed, such as when a new comment is added. When this occurs it's more useful to have the cache re-sync itself in that particular area, thus updating the cache files accordingly. I guess that's just a different methodology though, either way giving users more control over how the cache works would be useful.

Nice observations, all I can say is I agree.

If my who knows how many year text file arsenal of code snippets serves me correct, this is what we need to run after a comment is written... I think? Right? lol

Code:
<?php
include('admin/head.php');
cache_remover();
?>

Just copy your Cutenews 1.4.6 templates to the 2.5.4 templates. After that you have to change the links in the template. Check out the default template coming with the download to find out how to create links in CNR 2.5.4.

Let's say you extract Cutenewsru to /admin on your server and your website is called bazookasrock.com

To log in to cutenewsru.com visit:
http://www.bazookasrock.com/admin

To view a sample of how your news would look when you complete your websites layout visit:
http://www.bazookasrock.com/admin/example

So you're saying after you download, extract, upload, and visit http://www.bazookasrock.com/admin you still are getting a blank page?

(or is your comp setup as a web host already with something like wampserver?)
