 Cutenews starting to bog down server (40k+ pageviews per day |

I just noticed that cutenews is causing the cpu to go crazy. worst than my forum which has almost 2,000,000 posts and 2x more visitors.
Are there any parts of the script I can disable? useless stuff that can be commented out?
